OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

  • The study of the climate risk factors for agriculture, forestry and environment, and establishing prevention and control methods

  • The study of biological risk factors for agriculture, forestry and environment and establishing a method for prevention and control

  • The study of risk factors determined by antropic activity and establishing methods of prevention

SUMMARY

The research laboratory will function within the “Research Center of the Risk Factors for Agriculture, Forestry and Environment” in the Faculty of Environmental Protection, University of Oradea.

The interdisciplinary training activities include laboratory activities for students in the following fields: Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Breeding, Forestry, Forest Exploitations, Biotechnical and Ecological System Engineering, Processing Technology of Agricultural Products, Engineering of Agricultural Products, and it will also include activities for master students in Agriculture, Sustainable Management of Forestry Resources, Methodologies and Techniques of Ecological Rehabilitation in the Context of Sustainable Development, New Environmental Policies regarding the Possibilities of European Integration, and also activities for PhD students.

The research activity within the platform is an interdisciplinary one, and it is based on: Agrotechnics, Phytotechny, Agrochemistry, Phytopathology, Entomology, Crop Irrigation, Agrometeorology, Soil Science, Land Reclamation, Horticulture, Animal Breeding, Forestry, Pollution, Ecotoxicology, Microbiology and Teledetection.

In the first research objective a monitoring of the water regime in the agricultural and forestry ecosystems will be carried out, and by the use of the teledetection a pattern of the water impact on the yield will be realized; determinations of periods with pedological stress and water logging on 8 field crops (4 vegetable crops, apple tree, peach tree and vineyard) will be made; the impact on the yields will be pointed out and the quantification of irrigation and drainage works on quantity and quality of the yields will be accomplished.

Biological risk factors (weeds, diseases, pests) will be studied in order to obtain an integrated management of plant protection. The economical level of damage caused by weeds will be established (Aspera spica venti and Matricaria inodora for wheat, Convolvulus arvensis for maize and in greenhouses, Cirsium arvense for wheat and maize, Xanthium strumarium for maize and sunflower, Echinocloa crus galli for maize and sunflower, Stellaria media in protected places) diseases (Tilletia sp, Sorosporium holcisorghi, Plasmopara helianti, Phormopsis helianti, Cercopora beticola, Phytophtora infestans) and pests (Onlema melanopus in wheat and barley, Agriotes sp, Ostrinia nubilalis and Diabrotica virgifera, virgiferfero).

The risk factors produced by antropic activity are studied: secondary compaction, structure degradation, secondary acidity, alarming decrease of the humus, phosphorous and potassium content of the biological activity in the soil, erosion produced by water and wind, industrial pollution of the water and air.

In order to achieve the research activities mentioned above, the following management objecties have been established: 1) Supplying proper scientifical equipment needed in order to fulfill the research objectives 2) Implementation and dissemination of the research results obtained.

Most of the research activities are based on the results that will be obtained in long-term trials with crop rotations, fertilizers, soil tillages, irrigations, rehabilitation of petrolium polluted soil; the project offers the opportunity of exploiting this literally huge and priceless scientific data base. The methods of prevention and control will be established based on the research data obtained.

The equipment used will be extremely competitive with respect to some of the best equipment at a global level. This equipment will allow data collection from all the other research centers and from all long-term trials. The equipment will allow us to attend project auctions both on a national (8 projects CNCSIS and CEEX) and international level (2 projects). This will also help us to establish useful contacts with the economic environment.

The results of the researches will be published in three ISI papers and 15 papers in CNCSIS indexed journals; three books (Risk Factors for Agriculture, Risk Factors for Forestry, Risk Factors for Environment) and fliers will be published. Annual workshops with the three categories of the risk factors and biannual courses on three levels (students, farmers and specialists) will be organized. An International Symposium "Risk Factors for Agriculture, Forestry and Environment” will be organized every year and all of the 28 members of the European Agricultural University Consortium where the Faculty of Environmental Protection is member will be invited; other universities, institutes and research stations from Romania and from other countries will be invited.

The project’s value is of 3.375.900 RON and the project team includes 7 professors, 6 scientifical researchers, 10 associated professors, 23 lecturers, 9 assistants; there are 26 members that own the PhD degree and other 23 members that are Phd candidates. The previous research activity of the project team is a warantee for the good development of the project whose impact will be a very large one, giving a chance to the present and future students, master students and PhD candidates but also to the project team that will bring their contribution to the sustainable development of the agriculture, forestry and environment in the North-Western Romania.
